Guidelines for interviewing

Preparing for an interview

  • Establish job requirements

  • Make notes of incomplete questions

  • Study all written material

  • State preliminary ideas for further exploration in the interview

  • Be careful not to ask discriminatory questions

  • Beware of your own prejudices

  • Plan the areas that you want to cover

  • Consider questions analysing topics such as planning, organising, problem analysis, risk taking, etc

Opening the interview

  • Establish rapport

  • Explain purpose of the interview

Obtaining information

  • Ask job related questions

    • Make use of open-ended questions

    • Use follow-up questions

    • Emphasise the present rather than the past

Closing the interview

  • Give applicant a chance to ask questions
