i. The first purpose of appraisal is to improve a person’s performance in the job.
ii. A second purpose is to see what potential she or he might have for other jobs in the organization
iii. The manager doing the appraisal should be the immediate boss
iv. Discussion on performance should be based on objective standards.
v. Both the appraiser and employee need to prepare for the interview
vi. Constructive criticism is the key. Criticism does not improve anyone’s ability
vii. The appraiser needs to listen
viii. The aim is to work out a plan
ix. Helping to do a job better is a day today responsibility for manager.
x. Pay is not a subject for discussion during appraisals.
